One of the customs of Ancient Egypt was mummification. The Ancient Egyptians believed that when they died their soul left their body and then was reunited with the body after it was buried. They believed the soul would have to recognize the body in order to return to it and live forever.
The early Egyptians buried their dead in pits in the desert. The heat and dryness of the sand would cause the bodies to dehydrate very fast creating a mummy.
They then began to bury their bodies in coffins to keep the wild animals in the desert away from them. But the bodies decayed in the coffins because they were not exposed to the hot, dry sand of the desert.
The Ancient Egyptians after many years developed a different way to preserve bodies so they would remain lifelike. They would embalm the bodies and wrap them in strips of linen. This process is now known as mummification.
